We were at the Fountains by Kroger on Flower Mound Rd on Tuesday and this bird fell out of a tree! It fell about 20 feet to the ground.

This is after they had given me an antiemetic for my reaction to the epidural. It was also a sedative. They put Joshua here and I think what I said was, "You better take this thing. I'm gonna drop it." Ah, a mother's love under the influence.

Joshua lost his first tooth today! It was pretty loose before school, so I told him he could probably pull it out it was so loose. He said, "OK," and stuck his hand in there and yanked that tooth out!

Blessing of the Animals

Today was a special day at Joshua's Montessori Episcopal School. They had a Blessing of the Animals in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. Joshua really wanted to have Otto there, so I relented. They had scheduled the blessing for first thing, so Otto rides with us to school, and he is SUPER nervous in the car. Probably because his last car ride ended up in a 36 hour incarceration at the vet ( I need to blog that one...). We get out at school and head to the courtyard where the other pets are waiting. Only 3 other dogs and one cat, so not too crowded. The other dogs wanted to play, but Otto is a careful sort, so he usually just sniffs noses and then ignores. He was getting even more stressed out by this point. He was doing his weird high pitched whine but it sounds like he's gargling. Anybody know what I'm describing? He gets nervous enough that he cops an immediate and urgent squat to release some 'tension.' Thankfully I brought a baggie for just such an occasion, because nervous Otto is predictable. I pick up my prize and I seal the baggie but there is no outdoor trash can! Anywhere!! I can't go inside with the dog! So I ask a complete stranger standing around if she wouldn't mind carrying my dog's still-warm-from-the-oven poop in the building to throw it away. I mean, I couldn't hold it while the dog is being blessed by the priest, can I??
Then the kids all file out by class to watch and now Otto is really weirded out.

***Aside: Our dog Otto has little pet peeves (hehe). He chases lights, and can't leave them alone, he gets that gargly whine going if somebody puts on a hat, bubble, water in a spray, etc. etc.

Parents and teachers start to take photos. Otto has a thing about cameras. Even cameras not flashing-he recognizes that little sound a digital camera makes when it captures an image. We're getting more riled up by the second. Finally it's our turn for the blessing. We walk up before the priest and he's dipping a something holy into some holy water in a holy something vessel and then flinging it in Otto's face. Water is water, so he tries to bite and snap at these drops. So reverent.
And then we were done.......finally. All that was left was a trip back home with a nervous dog and then an amazing amount of vacuuming in the backseat because somebody sheds when he gets nervous.

Sandy's birthday party

For the sake of the story, we are going to pretend not to notice that it is Oct and Sandy's birthday is in August.
We had a little shindig for Sandy at the quilt store for her birthday. As a group, we "presented" her with a new suitcase and a new tote to match. She had lusted after the pieces but didn't feel justified in buying yet another suitcase. (I say "presented" because she had actually already taken the stuff on a trip by the time of her actual birthday.)

The really holey lemon cake photo you see was Sandy's attempt to make a new recipe. It called for you to poke holes and pour a glaze sauce over the top. The recipe mentioned a fork for the holes, but Sandy decided to turn her wooden spoon over and just mangle that thing.

And I really don't know the story here, I just liked the looks of it so I snapped a few pics..

No matter where I put the photos in relation to the text or how many time I push enter to move the lines down, still that mess. So I have stopped trying to fight it and I'm just making 500 posts out of what could be one. It's ok-makes me look more bloggy than I am....

Ride Around with Ali

I know I'm QUITE behind the times on my blogs, but better late than never! My friend Ali and I got to ride around together on the job for about 2 weeks as traveling speech therapists. It was a blast! Usually I'm riding alone, sad and desolate, nobody to have fun with. Ali and I laughed so much and we took some photos along the way.....of course.

When you do a map search of the city of Oak Cliff and choose the street view, this is the lovely scene you find.

Ali's tea dripped on the seat when she was getting in the car and she squeals and lifts her butt off the seat and is screaming, "it got me! it got me!"

Trip to Austin

I went on a trip last weekend to Austin for the Texas Speech Hearing and Language convention. It was fun! I went with a couple of my new co-workers and we had a good time. I didn't take as many photos as I usually do because I tried to go easy on them with the camera. My favorite is this one:

At dinner one night, the salad had a ranch vinaigrette that was really good, but I spilled it and it looked like doody.

Our excited faces were cuter in this one, but you couldn't see "special" on this shot.

AND while I was gone, Jesse got rear-ended in my car. Those of you that know us well know that Jesse is some kind of bad luck for cars. Since we've been married, he has totalled 3 cars and had 4 or 5 other wrecks. Now, to be fair, only one of the wrecks could have been construed as his fault and one of the totalled cars just sort of died of old age. It is at a comical stage now and we are VERY THANKFUL to have an old, obsolete car insurance policy that is written so that they can't cancel us, and apparently they don't really punish us for accidents, etc. Jesse was on the phone with the other guy's insurance trying to file the claim and he was having to go through the automated system. Several times he had to say "AUTO" and by the last few times he was doing that frustrated yelling at the automated phone system thing, and our poor dog Otto is cowering, wondering why he is getting yelled at.

We learned long ago that rental insurance is worth it for us, so when we are without a car for repairs (or because it has been totalled) then we aren't really without a car. Unfortunately, it is so commonplace that Joshua get excited about what our new rental will be! The rental before this one was waaaay basic and the locks and windows were old school. They had the crank to roll the windows down and Joshua thought that was the coolest thing ever. "MOM!! Does your window have this?? I roll it and the window goes down!!!"

This has been a while ago, but when we had that last cold snap when it was 40 degrees, Joshua decided that he would wear shorts and one of the wife-beater, sleeveless shirts Granny buys him from Walmart. He LOVES them! Anyway, he decides that he is going to wear this outfit to the gym. We fuss a little and he refuses to change clothes. I tell him to go and stand in the back yard and count to 20. I can see him through the upstairs window as he goes out into the backyard. He stands out there until the count of about 7 with his shoulders hunched and then hustles back in. He comes upstairs acting like he did it and I say, "that was only about 7 seconds." He grins at me and says, "ooookaaaaaaaay" and goes back down. When I see him go out this time, he has one of his jackets wrapped around his neck like a scarf and he has put on his furry crocs. And he counts loudly so that I can hear him through the window. By the time he gets in, he has decided that it might be a good idea to change.

I have pledged to make a concerted effort to take photos of the wierd things I see while I am out and about in the metroplex. Some of the things that I've seen lately that I have no documentation for because it was before my vow were:

A man in his 30s in a Mexican neighborhood working on his car with the Grease soundtrack blasting. I know it was the full soundtrack because I heard the tail end of one song and thought to myself, "that sounded familiar....." and then the next song started. I do speech therapy for an agency that serves children in their homes. In any profession where you visit people's homes you will see lots of odd things. This is one of the wierdest so far. It is a pair of scissors, taped to the wall, high up above a window. There is also a pushpin there-it's the tiny red dot. I apologize as I only had my cell phone so the quality is not great.

It's the Flu!

Two days ago when Granny picked up Joshua from school, the teachers told her how good he was all day and so sweet. I said, "Uh oh, he must be getting sick." He gets all mellow and totally unlike his usual energetic self when he gets a bug. So we've had fever and lethargy. Jesse took him to the Dr today and they did that painful scratchy q-tip up your nose test and yep, it's the flu. I sure hope I don't get it.
A few minutes ago I heard Joshua in his room in his sleep introducing himself to someone. About 10 minutes before that there was a HUGE bump-bump from his room. Otto was snoozing like a potato on the couch and it woke him up but he couldn't locate where the sound had come from. He was running around looking sort of lost and eventually went downstairs to check it out. I went in and Joshua was on the floor, still sound asleep. Kids.....

So I told you about watching Beauty and the Beast, right? Well, I'm on episode 10 (they skipped some on the website AND I'm working on a quilt pattern on the computer at the same time, so it's not like I'm a total loser) and at the beginning, there's a dinner party scene. And some jokester in the background says, "And what are the rest of you having?" like, man, he's gonna eat all of that! Mmmmmm!

And guess what? I just noticed that they have Twin Peaks up! That's so great because I loaned by boxed set (VHS, of course) to someone years ago and haven't seen it since.

So, I am sitting around trying to rest post surgery. I am doing pretty well, but I get tired pretty quickly. Jesse said it's a by-product of the not being able to eat. Makes sense.
Yesterday, I found Beauty and the Beast on CBS on their Classics page. I never saw it when it was originally aired in 1987, but I remember seeing things about it. I'll admit I was curious, so I watched the first episode. Of course, it was VERY 80's but other than that, not too bad if you can get past the huge, round glasses and mauve decor. There was one scene that made me laugh out loud. Vincent, the 'beast,' was riding on top of an elevator and he does the head shake to throw his hair over his shoulder with a little growly thing. It was just too much. There was a lot of cheese in the show, but not I attribute that more to the 80s factor than the show's premise. And guess what I'm watching as I type this and rest. Episode two.......

I had the ol' tonsils taken out on Friday the 19th. I'm doing pretty well I think. This hurts and it isn't pleasant to eat or talk much, but it's nothing compared to that monster of an abcess that I had. So I'm just sitting around and enjoying my narcotic stupor. I'm doing online defensive driving for a speeding ticket that I got (shame on me) and it's very odd when you have hydrocodone in your system. I've had to share several oddities with my buddy Carol so far and it's not just me. On the page that talks about the perils of any sort of drugs and driving, there was a photo that looked like the dog had attacked a couch cushion. We both, independently and without suggestion, came to the upholstery conclusion. So, I think it was supposed to be some kind of illegal substance, but heck if I know. Maybe someone out there could shed some light on this?

Tonight Jesse ordered pizza for dinner (I scraped off the cheesy-saucy-bready stuff from the hard crusty layer below and ate that. MMMMMM). When the deilvery boy was walking towards his car, Joshua yells, "I love you!!" The poor kid stammered and sort of said "ok, bye."

Ailing me

Here is my recent health history:
Got strep throat at the beginning of November-took antibiotics and 'got better.'
Started noticing itchy knees.
Got strep again the day before we returned from Florida at the end of November.
Got a peritonsillar abcess that the ENT had to 'take care of.'
Took antibiotics to get better.
Full blown psoriasis has attacked and once again, I am polka dotted and itching like crazy!!!!!!!!
This series of events is similar to one that I had last January, although no abcess then. I have asked the ENT to yank out my tonsils because, really, who has time for all this mess???!!?!?
On December 19th I'll be going under the knife, so pray for me that I won't bleed to death. And, if I do, I'll see you when you get to Heaven! Be sure to get your ticket! Don't wait!

And he always draws those lines for clothing instead of just stick arms and legs. This one is better than the last batch which had 'shirts' but stick legs with no apparent britches....

Hey! I'm here! No need to worry any longer! I had a recurrence of strep throat and it turned into a nice peritonsillar abcess and I had to go have an ENT 'take care of it.' That's all the detail I'll give in case there are squeamish readers. If you want to know more, email me personally and I'll give you all the goopy details.
So before all this pain took place, I was on vacation in Florida. WONDERFUL! There were many fun photos with family, but here is one that keeps making me laugh. It's a great shot of us and it's fun, but every time I look at it I think, "What's that bald spot on my head? Am I Larry from the 3 Stooges?" It's just freaky....

Joshua went last night to a Trunk or Treat and festival at a local church. These are really great because there are bounce houses and other fun things. Here is one of the pieces of candy that he got. I believe that the whole Bible is true, that it is God's infallible word to man. I am not sure however, that each verse is appropriate to put on children's goodies. "Mom, what is adultery?"

I had a great night out with some friends from high school last night. We went to Buca di Beppo and had a lovely dinner and wanted to keep talking, so we went down the road to Cheesecake Factory for dessert. We sit down and who should be at the table next to us but an old sorority sister! She is a friend that I love but haven't really talked to much in a long time. She was there with a man, and I jokingly asked her, "What are you doing here with a man that's not your husband?" I was kind of joking, because she'd never cheat so I thought it was a coworker or something else. She says. "Oh you didn't hear?" Now, she's the kind of person to joke, so I kind of blew it off. She asked how my hubby was, so I asked after hers. She tells me as far as she knows, he's doing ok. All the while, her date is sitting and looking amused. I'm feeling a little red in the face. We ended our little conversation and enjoyed our respective food. I noticed her get up to go to the bathroom, so I dart away from the table to meet her in the ladies'. I told her I was so sorry if I totally messed up a first date. How embarassing!!!! She was very sweet and told me not to worry about it, she was just getting a friend vibe anyway. Apparently she and her husband had divorced and the news hadn't been disseminated. Yikes.

Customer Service Award

One of our family traditions is to go to Burger King for dinner before we go to church on Saturday nights. Unfortuntely, the Burger King near us is close to the bottom on the service scale. It is AMAZING how wierd it is in there, too. The events of our last visit were not surprising, but they are definitely blogworthy. We show up at our friendly Burger King and go to wait at the counter to place an order. There is one employee sitting in the dining room having a break. As we walk up, there are 2 employees stepping out the back, door, one of whom looks and sees us but keeps going. There's a guy standing over by the fryers, but he sort of scootches over so he is behind the contracption that keeps the burgers warm. You know the one that looks like a burger slide from the cook to the cashier? Anyway, that thing sort of blocks him from our view so that we are supposed to not see him, but I can see him through the burger chutes! He's probably really bad at hide and seek. So we stand there. And stand there. It's probably 3 minutes before someone helps us. That doesn't sound like much, but it really feels that way when you're standing at the Burger King counter waiting.....we finally are allowed to order and we go sit to wait. Joshua likes to go play while we wait for our food so off he goes. There is a little hispanic boy playing in the play area. Joshua tries to talk to him, but he only speaks Spanish. I suggest that Joshua use the Spanish he has learned at school to try to communicate (perro pequeno). Our food arrives and we eat for a little while. I look through the window into the play area and see the little boy walk up the the edge of the slide and assume a stance that I'm very familiar with, having monitored a little boy's every excretory activity for several years before he was an independent tinkler. So the little boy walks up the slide and pees on it. IN it! I jump and run in there and ask him, in an incredulous voice, of course, "Did you just pee in there??" He replies, "eh?" I try again with, "Did you use the bathroom in there?" He once again gives me the "EH?" So I go out to the dining room and the employee that has been sitting down, 'having a break' is walking towards us and says something in Spanish. I tell her that the boy just peed in that room. She looks mildly concerned and goes in to chat with him. She comes out and goes to the counter and gets NAPKINS to clean it up. Napkins! No disinfectant, no water, no nothing to really clean! I mean, I know urine is sterile, but I'd still rather there weren't any traces of it on the slide where children will be PLAYING!!! So she goes out and up to the counter and is telling someone about the situation. I really can't tell which of the women working belongs to this little boy. I'm assuming that is the situation-one of them needs to work but has her son so she brings him to work and tells him not to leave the play area. But none of these women looks nearly mortified enough for this to be her son. Shortly after all this, the boy pushes open the emergency door and loud, piercing alarms go off. Then, the woman that cleaned up the pee and one of the other women leave with the little boy, climbing into a huge truck that had been taking up one of the front customer spaces. The whole story smacks of customer service, you know?

PS Joshua's toy with his kid's meal was a Neopet named Moehog...

So, I'm renewing my CPR certification online tonight, and this portion of text is included in the section on HIV, Hep C, and other bloodborne pathogens found at http://www.cprtoday.com/. Do you think that most flight attendants are aware that they're on the short list?? I mean, I know about plane crashes and such, but hopefully that is pretty rare, right? And their job title is the only one that isn't pluralized. Maybe statistics show that only the flight attendant in the back of the plane is going to make it...

I know my dog is a freak. He gets wierd around flashlights, bubbles, balloons, cameras, toys with wheels, and hats. But he is smart, too! He does this thing where he's in my face really close, almost nose to nose and staring big eyed at me. So today, I looked behind him at nothing and gasped in a loud and horrified manner. He turned fast and started running that way wondering if there was maybe a bubble or balloon that he needed to protect me from.

Joshua is doing swimming lessons this week, and before they jump in the water, they do some stretches and jumping jacks. With this age group, there are few things quite as hilarious as jumping jacks. And obviously something in the booty area is bugging him since he's prospecting back there....

FREE COOKIES! FREE LEMONADE!

Joshua and I made cookies the other day and he was so excited making them. He decided that he wanted to 'sell' them for free out front. We set up the table and made some lemonade. His voice rang out with the call, "COOKIES FOR SALE!!!" I remind him to say "free cookies" since we're not charging. He begins to peddle the wares with the correct phrasing. But there is nobody out. It's only about 9:30, but it is already sweltering!!! Our next door neighbor did come out to get in the car leaving for work. Joshua asked if he wanted a cookie or lemonade and he said no thanks. Come on! It's not like we were even asking money! Make the kid happy and take a cookie!! We discussed several options for a more profitable experience. Eventually I talk him into giving the cookies away for free at Quilt Country, where we'll be going anyway that day. He agrees and we put away the table. And he did have a good time taking the cookies around and offering free goodies.

Jesse had surgery yesterday on his big toes to relieve pain caused by HUGE bone spurs in the joint where the toe attaches to the foot. His toe would not flex upward AT ALL. No movement and it was starting to be very painful, so he decided to go ahead and have it fixed. Here are some photos of the post-op fun going on around our house.

The nasty yellow stuff is the iodine they bathed his legs in before the surgery. It DOES NOT wash off! And notice the note to self by the Dr written in Sharpie on his legs.

The Dr said to keep the mummy bandages on for 2 weeks, and they can't get wet. Here was our first attempt at bodily hygeine.

I was visiting another blog, and she had this neat little thing that was a celebrity morph in which it morphed her face to Mariah Carey. I thought it was interesting, and on the site they also have face recognition to match your face with celebrities. Apparently, I most closely resemble ugly men. Oh, there were a couple of pretty boys, too and even a few females, but I tried several pics of me and males were predominant. And Larry King showed up twice. I tried Jesse and he got Sarah Michelle Gellar, Rod Stewart (momo, you'll appreciate that) and Oded Fehr.

And here is the guy they picked to morph me into....couldn't they at least let me choose male or female??? So the moral of the story is, don't get your hopes up. They didn't install any flattery software in there...

She loves the pie, does Momo. On one trip to, or from, Houston, we stopped at the famous Sam's in Fairfield. She had ordered a slice of coconut cream pie to go. We got in the car, and she put the styrofoam box between the seats on the floor. She lasted about 10 minutes before she had to eat it. I said. "You've been thinking about the pie the whole time haven't you?" "Yeah," she agreed. So she balances the container between her chest and the steering wheel and proceeds to eat the pie as we barrel down the highway at about 65 mph. I offered to at least steer, but she said she could handle it. And handle it she did. Here is Momo enjoying her coconut cream pie at one of our lunches to the awesome burger place near our retreat hideout in Greenwood, Texas. The picture where she looks a little hunched over is her protecting the pie from possible poachers.

I've been SO bad about posting!! No real excuse, just daily life getting in the way.
Here are some funny things Joshua has said lately:

Today he told me that when he grows up he wants to work at the cardibal. Where they have the ferrist wheel. I told him that if he was going to work there, he should know that it's 'carnival.' He proceeded to argue with me that I was completely wrong and he was right. This is a common occurrence lately....

A boy at the gym named Justin, who is older than Joshua by a couple of years, keeps telling Joshua that he's a baby and to go away, that he doesn't want to play with him. I've been trying to train Joshua to tell Justin that it doesn't matter what he thinks. Joshua said he'd tell him, "Justin, you're mediocre."

We're at Burger King and Joshua has been on this jag of telling me he loves me more than dad, and vice versa, and that he loves Jesus more than us, and so he yells from the top of the play thingie at BK, "I love you more than David Hasselhoff!!"

Jesse and Joshua return from the gym one evening arguing about whether Joshua is an animal or not. He asks me and I tell him that technically, yes, he is an animal. He is VERY upset at this. He argues and argues. Jesse asks him to tell me the difference between people and animals. Joshua says that "animals poop on the ground."

It is REALLY scary to pray things such as this, because they are the most likely prayers to be answered-those that align with the will of God. And things can get shaken up. But all the plans that are natural for me to make and yearn for are selfish and don't help anyone but me. Does it matter if I have a certain amount of money in the bank? Do I really need to have a certain kind of car? What should matter is the way that I can touch the lives of others by loving and serving and caring. Those should be my plans.

Jesus, help my heart and help me to let go of things that don't seek to serve you and to serve the precious people that you died to save. Thank you so much for your help and forgiveness as I daily fail to care for others more than myself.

We had Open House at Joshua's preschool tonight and there was an art show in which were displayed all the cute little deelybobs and such that young'uns make. Joshua's class had made animals and they had titles included. Most kids had named theirs 'kitty' or 'snake' or 'spider'. Not my boy.......his art is serious and emotional.
